Full-Service Moving

Three things you can count on encountering in a lifetime: death, taxes, and moving. According to the US Census Bureau, the average American makes 11.7 moves in a lifespan. But no matter how many times you have “gotten your move on,” it doesn’t make it any less tedious. Just ask Sisyphus. Sisyphus was a king who, in Greek mythology, was punished by the Gods to roll an immense boulder up a hill, only to watch it roll back down and repeat the process over and over again, throughout eternity. Does this sound familiar? If so, you may have undergone one too many do-it-yourself moves. And, speaking of eternity, do-it-yourself moves take up a great deal of time as well as energy. While it will likely take you weeks to pack up all your belongings yourself, a company who offers full-service moving will take care of all your packing, moving, and unpacking, all in one day!

Full-service moves aren’t for everyone, sure. They are expensive, and, if you are a control-freak—er, let’s just say control fan—it may be unnerving to watch a bunch of strangers fiddling with all your personal belongings, however professional they may be. Nonetheless, in certain situations, a full-service move is more like a full-stress removal:

  • Moving during winter. Remember, all professional movers are thoroughly trained in the proper procedures for packing your goods in order to protect them from the elements. A full-service moving company will ensure that all your carpets, floors, and possessions are properly covered during your move.
  • Moving long distance or across country. The hassle involved with renting a truck apply to winter moving as well as long distance moving: When you rent a truck yourself, you not only have to pay the gas, but you have to navigate an unfamiliar truck through unfamiliar areas. You will also have to make sure your insurance covers the rental vehicle or else purchase insurance from the truck rental company. Furthermore, professional movers are highly experienced in driving their trucks, and dealing with any unexpected parking or traffic problems.
  • Health problems. A full-service move may not seem costly when weighed against time in a hospital bed.
  • You have valuables to move. Remember, your reliable mover will only use high-quality boxes, moving blankets, and other packing materials. The more valuable your belongings are, the wiser it is to leave packing and moving it to the professionals. Moreover, regardless as to how valuable your items are, they are much less likely to get damaged during a full-service move than during a DIY move. However, keep in mind that there are certain personal documents you will probably want to put aside to move yourself, such as birth certificates, or any other personal documents or possessions you would feel more comfortable moving yourself.

Before you put up your feet and get ready for a moving vacation, there is some preparation you will have to do, even for a full-service move. First, you will want to compare several moving companies to check out their rates. Now, you have keep in mind another one of those certainties in life - additional fees. Yes, though they offer “full-service moves”, many companies will charge extra fees for certain services. For example, hooking up appliances or even carrying goods up a flight of stairs. You should have several companies do an in-home assessment where they will give you an accurate estimate, and they can foresee any potential problems or needs pertaining to your particular move. You will also need to be at home during the day of the move to give any special instructions or answer any questions about the handling of your objects.

With all the preparation and labour involved, from making as many boxes as a compulsive mime to safely moving and driving all your belongings, a do-it-yourself move is sometimes just too overwhelming an option. But just as Archimedes confidently stated that with a big enough lever, he could move the earth, a full-service moving company may be just the lever you need to get your move moving—the stress-free way.
