Packing LCD and Stereo
LCD TVs, plasma TVs and stereo systems are valuable electronics that can easily get damaged while moving. They are prone to scratches and can become inoperable, if they are not well-packed. So, extra caution should be exercised while packing these items.
The first step to packing LCDs and stereo systems is to remove the cables and cords and allow the system to cool down. In the meantime, the cables and the cords have to be labeled and color coded to make it easy to assemble at the destination. Once this is done, the user manual has to be checked to see if there are any special instructions that have to be followed for packing. In the case of stereos with turntables, the platter of the record should be removed. If it cannot be removed, it should be sealed with a plastic tape from end to end to prevent it from damage. The individual parts should be dismantled and packed with two or three layers of bubble wrap.
The next step is to pack them in the original box of the manufacturer. It is a good idea to double box them for additional protection. If the original box is not available, then a good substitute of the same dimensions can be chosen. Both the inner and the outer boxes should have padding on the bottom and the sides. The components should be tightly fitted into the box and the spaces should be filled with sufficient packing materials like packing peanuts.
In the case of an LCD or plasma TV, the procedure is slightly different. Start with placing the TV in an upright position and then wrap it with one layer of thin foam followed by two layers of bubble wrap. The screen requires additional protection and this can be done with the help of a thick cardboard of the screen's size. The cardboard should be taped to the screen using adhesive tapes. You can even add two layers of cardboard to protect the screen, especially if you are moving long distance. The TV should always be kept in an upright position and there should be no sharp or heavy object in front of the screen. It is better to have two people to carry the TV because some models may be heavy for one individual and there is a higher chance of dropping it. Finally, the TV as well as the box containing stereo parts should be marked “Fragile – Electronics/ TV” to let the movers know that they have to be careful.
This process can be time-consuming and labor-intensive. If you are hard-pressed for time, it’s better to take help from the moving companies who will be more than happy to do it. They have vast knowledge about packing and shipping, and they know to pack it the right way. By using this option, you are relieved of physical and mental stress.
