Protecting Your Carpets, Floors and Walls

Though we would often assume that home gets that “lived in” look from well, being lived in, the most damage suffered by floors, carpets and walls often occurs during the move in itself.

CARPETS
Dirt and stains are the biggest problem when it comes to protecting your carpets. Movers sometimes use “rug runners” which are generally cloth or can be like a thin indoor carpet, acting like a runway into a room or down the hallway. Rug runners are fairly reliable, however, in wet conditions they can soak through and possibly stain. You can also opt for a thin plastic floor protector, which comes in rolls and is usually 36 inches wide. The stickiness on one side ensures that it stays put on floors and comes particularly in handy on carpeted stairs.

HARDWOOD FLOORS
Scratches and dents are the biggest problem when it comes to hardwood floors. Floor companies recommend using strips of 1/4” hardboard as a runner under the wheels (if rolling) or under furniture legs (if moving).

TILE OR VINYL FLOORS
Both tile and vinyl floors are relatively hazard free when it comes to moving, however a strip of rosin paper is a good safeguard against any possible damage.

WALLS
While you are at much greater risk of damaging floors or carpets, moving can still cause them some damage that can be avoided. To prevent scratches, use a drop cloth to cover the walls of “tight squeeze” areas like doorframes and hallways.

Sharp-edged objects can often be a hazard generally when it comes to moving, especially for your walls. To ensure minimal damage you can put felt pads on the backs of dressers, bookcases and headboards, or cover objects with moving pads or blankets. If you have larger items that need to be slid across the floor, you can protect the corners of you wall will corner guards, plastic protectors that are easy to use and remove.

The more care your movers and yourself exert during your move can make as much difference as taking all these precautions. Do your best to avoid muddy or gravely areas. Also be sure to talk to your moving company about what protective measures they offer, as many can provide moving runners and the like. Exerting care when moving heavy belongings will not only protect the items of course, but can save you or your movers unnecessary damage to yourself! (Of course, just in case, you should be prepared with bandaids and antiseptic as part of your moving day “Essentials Kit.”) If you do not want to spend too much money when protecting your floors and walls, old blankets, towels, and a lot of careful vigilance can go a long way!
